Alpha Arbutin – The Science Behind Arbutin in Skin Bleaching Creams

December 17th, 2009

There is some impressive science to back up claims that alpha arbutin is a good skin lightener that you can use without risk.

We ran across the results of a medical study that put it very plainly: “Alpha arbutin is an effective and safe ingredient for skin lightening.” We dug up the study, to make certain it was not based on fly-by-night science.

Alpha Arbutin is an old homeopathic remedy that used to be put on wounds. People discovered it lightened the skin around the wound.

Alpha arbutin was put to a scientific test. A study, in Japan, was titled “Inhibitory Effects of Alpha-Arbutin on Melanin…”. Doctor K. Sugimoto and his colleagues at the Biochemical Research Lab in Osaka, Japan wanted to know if alpha arbutin inhibits melanin from growing in human cells.

  • Why melanin? It gives skin dark color. To fade skin color you have to inhibit the body’s production of melanin. Then your skin lightens, moles tone down, and dark circles under the eyes fade.
  • Why? Because your body constantly makes new skin, and throws out the old. The new skin has less melanin. Old dark skin is shed naturally.
  • Why Japan? Asians have been lightening skin for centuries. It’s cultural. The doctors wanted to be sure the alpha arbutin so commonly used in their country was safe in products sold throughout Asia.

The Japanese medical investigators put human skin cells to the test. Their big concern was that if you interrupt melanin, the whole cell becomes abnormal.

They were able to report that alpha arbutin cut melanin production by more than half but had no other effect on cells developing normally.

Skin Whitening Pills – Are Skin Lightening Pills More Effective Than Skin Bleaching Creams?

December 10th, 2009

It is advertised as a “magic” skin lightening pill.  But no “wizards” have made sure glutathione is safe.

It is an antioxidant. It’s been used to fight aging. To be honest, it can work. If you want to take the risk.  A report in the International Journal of Cosmetic Science warns about glutathione. The skin lightening pills contain a lot of it. But no one has studied how much glutathione is too much.

Oddly, the only study of the stuff was in Italy. Doctors looked into whether it made a good hangover pill. They thought it might push alcohol out of blood. Glutathione messes with your blood.

It makes sense to avoid glutathione pills when there are safe alternatives that have been safety tested.

To avoid severe side effects, check out the newest skin bleaching creams which use natural ingredients. Look for kojic acid, arbutin, and vitamin C. They avoid the risk of complications

Michael Jackson Skin Bleaching – Why He Used a Skin Bleaching Cream

December 2nd, 2009

Michael Jackson’s untimely death focused attention on the changes in his skin color. Did he use a skin bleaching cream?

The singer insisted that he had a disease called vitiligo, which results in cloudy white spots on darker skin.

In a famous interview with Oprah Winfrey Jackson said, “I have a skin disorder that destroys the pigmentation of the skin. It’s something I cannot help. When people make up stories that I don’t like who I am, it hurts me. I am proud of my race, and I am proud of who I am.”

Many people who suffer vitiligo do turn to a skin bleaching cream, in an attempt to fade the color of skin surrounding the vitiligo patches. The evenness of Michael Jackson’s lighter skin caused some observers to speculate he was using skin lighteners for that reason.

Vitiligo is misunderstood because it is rare. Only 1 percent of the world’s population develops it.

Skin Lightening – How Does Alpha Arbutin Safely Make Skin Lighteners Effective?

December 2nd, 2009

How can a plant bears love be effective in skin lightening creams? The plant contains Alpha Arbutin, a natural skin lightener.

The Bearberry Plant gets it name from its biggest fans, the North American bears. They like to eat the berries. Herbalists like the leaves, and have used them for centuries to make alternative medicines.

An extract of the Bearberry leaf is Alpha ArbutinIt is a natural skin whitening agent.

Why? An effective skin lightener must inhibit melanin. This is the pigment that gives skin darker color. Alpha Arbutin works on melanin. Six Japanese medical researchers found alpha arbutin successfully interrupted melanin production. Alpha arbutin reduced pigmentation in skin cells by 25 percent in one test, and 40 percent in a follow up study.

The study also found Alpha Arbutin is perfectly safe on cells. They grew normally, but with less melanin.

In the words of the scientists in Japan, “These results indicate that alpha-arbutin is an effective and safe ingredient for skin-lightening.”

Skin Bleaching: A Global Trend and a Billion-Dollar Business Attracts Media Coverage

November 19th, 2009

The global market for skin lightening products is projected to reach ten billion dollars within five years. The demand was first heaviest in the Asia-Pacific countries.

It is now being driven by new markets in the West. Consumer awareness is growing as celebrities and sports stars, such as Sammy Sosa, talk about their skin bleaching experience. “The growth in ethnic populations in the US and UK is now said to have accelerated demand for lightening products in the West,” says one cosmetics industry analyst.

The Today Show reported on the prevalence of skin bleaching procedures in the US recently.

  • There are dozens of skin bleaching techniques, including laser treatment, skin bleaching creams, and chemical peels.
  • Some of these methods involve dermatologists, others are available over-the-counter.

Skin bleaching products, once limited to use on the face, have grown in use on overall skin tone. Another trend in the skin whitening market is a huge rise in skin bleaching products used by men.

Skin Lighteners – How Skin Lightening Creams and Gels Work

November 18th, 2009

The medical term for skin lightening is depigmentation. Two doctors at the University of British Columbia have completed a scholarly review of skin bleaching treatments.

They examined skin lightening agents (creams and gels), as well as lasers, and skin peels, are commonly used to treat the condition known as hyperpigmentation

What is Hyperpigmentation?

  • The symptoms include freckling, age spots, and moles.
  • Naturally dark skin areas under the eyes and arms are also examples.
  • Melasma is a serious disorder resulting in irregular patches of skin several shades darker than surrounding tissue.
  • The disorder affects Caucasians as well as people of Asian, Middle Eastern and African skin tones.
  • The study explains the cause of hyperpigmentation, which are excessive amounts of the dark pigment melanin drawn to the skin surface.

The doctors cite a growing number of what are medically referred to as depigmenting agents. Over-the-counter skin lightening products act as depigmenting agents, as do prescription-strength solutions employed by skin care professionals.

  1. Some skin lighteners work by impacting the pigment melanin itself.
  2. The doctors cite kojic acid, which works to decrease melanin in skin cells.
  3. The doctors consider Arbuton an alternative medicine that inhibits melanin activity.

The medical researchers concluded there is currently not evidence that medical techniques are superior to topical skin lightening, and called for more studies.
